Veneers?

veneers

More on veneers. We only advise our patients to do them on upper teeth and they don’t normally last 20 years. 5 years would be the average. Most people do grind their teeth or chew hard things once in a while.

Gaps between teeth widen due to flossing?

Are you one of those people who believe that flossing will increase the size of the gaps between your teeth?

If you are, please read on as you have a misconception!

You may have seen it yourself that after flossing your teeth, the gaps between your teeth becomes more noticeable than ever. Thus, you decide to stop flossing as you are afraid that the gaps will get bigger and bigger!

Please take note that this is a WRONG decision!

This is because the gaps are not there because of your flossing. The fact is that the gaps are already there even before you floss. The reason why you are unable to see the gaps is because they are being filled up by calculus/tartar (the thing that you want to remove via flossing)

Hence, when the tartar is removed via flossing, the gaps between your teeth becomes noticeable.

Please do not give up flossing because it does more good than harm! :D

implant

If your dentist advises you to have an implant surgery and you have decided to give it a go, here are some tips to get yourself ready for the treatment.

1) Be mentally prepared
It is best if you can do some research on implant surgery beforehand so as to be more clear of what you will be going through in the next 3 months.
Here is a brief breakdown of the entire implant procedure.

StageI :
# screws(implants) will be surgically drilled into your jawbone and your gums will be sutured closed to allow the bone to fuse with the implant
# 7 days later, you will visit your dentist again for the removal of stitches

StageII ( 2 months later) :
# abutments will be attached to the implants
# temporary crowns are then placed on the abutments

StageIII ( a week later) :
# your dentist will take impression to prepare for the making of permanent crowns
# you will then obtain your permanent crowns after another week

2) Be physically prepared
For patients with conditions such as high-blood pressure, it is important to control your blood pressure at the healthy level. For patients with diabetes, you will also need to ensure that your blood sugar level is maintained at a healthy level before you undergo the surgery.

Oral healthcare for kids.

brushing
Carries can occur from the very first tooth emerging in infants. Parents should help their infants to rinse with water after each feeding. Specialized toothbrushes for infants are available on the market. Alternatively, towels or gauze wet with water can be used to wipe the teeth daily. Brushing should commence once all the milk teeth have emerged (when kids are about 2 years old).

Parents, set a good example for your kids and do the brushing routine with them. Children often imitate parent’s behavior, thus brushing your teeth together with them can get them started on a good oral healthcare.

The other side of mouthwash

I’ve had this misconception – mouthwash is always good, since those commercials are always talking about the antiseptic properties of mouthwash and how brushing alone, is unable to remove all the bacteria. Thus, I’ve been using mouthwash faithfully after brushing each day for these few years. Guess what? Here’s the other less widely known side to using mouthwash.

washing

Most mouthwash aren’t ideal for long term usage. Some mouthwash contains chemicals that can cause tooth staining or result in alteration of taste when used regularly over time. (eg. Chlorhexidine)

Alcohol based mouthwash have been reported by media to increase risks of oral cancer. (Note that alcohol consumption, smoking and poor oral care are the main cause)

While mouthwash has antiseptic properties to control plaque, it is best used under dentist’s recommendation or only when brushing is inconvenient (after an extraction/surgery). Never to replace brushing.

To improve oral hygiene, brush twice daily. Most people spend around 2min for brushing each day, while it can only clear 40% of the bacteria, leaving 60%, (brushing more than twice may not help) it is the best recommendation that dentists can give. So don’t be enticed by those commercials into overusing your mouthwash!

Reason for extractions

Extractions inevitably sound painful and the idea of losing a tooth may sound bad, but sometimes, it becomes a necessity for better dental health.

extraction

Here are some indications which may be signalling for an extraction:

1. Stranded milk teeth such that it interferes with the eruption of adult teeth.
2. Critically decayed teeth or dental disease that does not respond well to treatment.
3. Fractured crowns that cannot be restored.
4. Teeth which causes inflammation in gums repeatedly and results in decay of surrounding teeth.
5. Maligned teeth.
6. Non functioning teeth that hinders denture wearers.
7. Lesion teeth which can cause disease in the body.
8. Overly loosened teeth caused by dental disease.

However, if you are thinking of an extraction, be sure to update your dentist about your medical conditions. Heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, kidney disease, hepatitis, menstruation and acute inflammation are some of the conditions which may affect the course of treatment. When in doubt, do not be afraid to list out all your health conditions to the dentist.

Things to note after your extraction:
1. Keep the gauze on for 30 min. If bleeding continues, replace the gauze for up to an hour. It is normal for traces of blood to appear in the mouth within 24 hours.
2. Refrain from licking the wound, or spitting saliva repeatedly.
3. It is alright to consume soft food at room temperature an hour after extraction, but refrain from hard or hot food.

Night Grinder

Have you had unexplained headaches and aching jaws? Or have your loved ones complaint about a grinding sound at night? Well, it is possible that you may have been grinding your teeth. Don’t be shocked, most people are unaware of this since it occurs unconsciously.

Grinding

The duration and extent may vary for teeth grinding but it usually occurs at night. Here’s the four main cause of teeth grinding:

1)Inappropriate biting habits during the day. (Cut back on gum chewing or biting of pencils and nails!)
2)Stress, which causes the brain to vent the frustration by signalling grinding.
3)Anatomy factors such as disorders in the digestive system, disorders of endocrine system, malnutrition in children or allergy.
4)Your job. Those with jobs requiring high level of concentration such as drivers or athletes are also prone to teeth grinding.

Besides headaches and aching jaws, teeth grinding also causes cosmetic problems as it wears away the teeth and shorten their length. Prolonged grinding may result in loosening, fracturing or even loss of teeth.

If you suspect that you have night grinding problems, make a trip here at New Age Cosmetic Dentist. Dr Chan is able to make a custom mouth guard fitting your teeth perfectly, such that it can prevent your teeth from wearing out.
